How This Ranking Was Built (Methodology)
Rather than judge "Tokyo iconicity" as one lump verdict, we broke it into six independent axes and combined them with weights (total = Σ(axis score × weight)/100). Fame and annual visitor counts are not among the scoring axes.

Spots recently built or redeveloped (Tokyo Skytree / Odaiba–Rainbow Bridge / Roppongi Hills / Ikebukuro Sunshine 60 / Tsukiji Outer Market–Toyosu Market / the Meguro River) are scored conservatively on "transhistorical esteem" and flagged flags=era-adjusted.
Scope, unit, and area-type coverage
The unit is iconic tourism/urban spots within Tokyo proper. Standalone architectural design merit and the rarity of natural scenery are scored in a companion piece. The 26-item longlist was drawn from four area types: central Tokyo, old downtown (shitamachi), the waterfront, and the suburbs/riverside.
Data sources
We prioritize general knowledge from local histories, urban history, and shrine/temple provenance. Precise visitor figures are kept qualitative. No text is copied from other sites' Tokyo tourism rankings. Safety, crowding, and operating status are not asserted.

Findings Against Conventional Wisdom
① The conventional wisdom says it's absurd for Shibuya Scramble Crossing — a plain intersection — to outrank Tokyo Tower and the Imperial Palace. Here the numbers put it at a clear #1. It posts the highest marks of any candidate on visual iconicity (10), crowd-flow spectacle (10), and live-camera watchability (10), while cultural-historical meaning (5) stays mid-pack. The other five axes still carry it to #1 overall. Under the "heritage focus" lens it drops back to #10 (try the lens above).
② The Imperial Palace / Nijūbashi scores a perfect 10 on both cultural-historical meaning and transhistorical esteem, yet sits at #11. Its crowd-flow spectacle (3) and live-camera watchability (4) are low — prestige and "won't get old on a live feed" turn out to be separate questions. Under the "heritage focus" lens it jumps to #2.
③ Recent landmarks like Tokyo Skytree, Odaiba, and Roppongi Hills don't rank near the top. All three are still young since opening and fall under the era adjustment that scores transhistorical esteem conservatively.
