Not current popularity, not "who's trending right now" — we broke influence into six criteria: style invention, cross-genre ripple, social-phenomenon status, and transhistorical reference. This isn't a declaration of the "greatest gyaru culture icon"; it's a ranking, by our own yardstick, of how much each entry built the prototype for the gal look that followed and how far it rippled into other genres. Change the yardstick and the order moves (try the lenses below). Where this piece covers real people, entries never touch their private lives — only the phenomenon or style they came to embody is evaluated.

How This Ranking Was Built (Methodology)

To avoid reducing "the influence of gyaru culture" to a single word, we broke it into six independent criteria and combined them with weights (total = Σ(score × weight)/100). Current name recognition and "who's popular right now" are not among the criteria.

Normalization Rule
Current name recognition, social-media mention counts, and present-day popularity are not among the criteria. Subjects recently rediscovered or reinterpreted (the Y2K Revival, Reiwa Gyaru) are scored conservatively on "transhistorical reference," flagged flags=era-adjusted.
Scope & Unit
Crosses the people, phenomena, styles, magazines, and speech patterns that carried gyaru culture from Heisei into Reiwa. Unit = a gyaru culture icon. Entries naming real people evaluate only the phenomenon or style they came to embody — never their private lives.
Data Sources
Prioritizes general knowledge from fashion history, magazine history, and Japan's Buzzword-of-the-Year Awards. Where exact founding years, award years, and the like vary by source, we stick to qualitative language rather than precise figures. No text reproduced from other sites' gyaru features.

Where the Conventional Wisdom Breaks

The conventional wisdom says an icon with Ayumi Hamasaki's name recognition shouldn't stop at #7 instead of #1 — on this axis, she lands at #7. Her contemporary iconicity (9) comes close to the top tier even by our yardstick, but her style invention (7) falls just short of Kogyaru and Namie Amuro (both 9). "Symbolizing your era" and "inventing the style everyone after you references" are different questions.
Loose Socks, a single item, stops at #14. Its distinctiveness and contemporary iconicity are high, but it functioned less as an inventor of a whole styling system and more as one component that perfected the kogyaru look.
Gyaru-go — neither a visual style nor a person — makes it to #8. Its cross-genre ripple and social-phenomenon scores are both high; because our criteria don't depend on visual style, a design like this is exactly what surfaces it.
Reiwa Gyaru and the Y2K Revival — the most talked-about subjects right now — sink to #19 and #20. Both are scored conservatively on "transhistorical reference" under era_rule; present-day buzz itself isn't one of the criteria.

Caveats & Limitations

Each criterion's 0–10 score is an estimate based on the descriptions we gathered, and judging style invention and transhistorical reference in particular involves editorial judgment. Founding years, award years, and the like are kept to qualitative language — "reportedly," "sources vary" — rather than precise numerical comparison.

Era-Adjustment Flag: The Y2K Revival and Reiwa Gyaru are both flagged "era-adjusted" under era_rule. The length of their evaluation history could be revisited in the future.

Unverified Flag: Shiro Gyaru, Deko-Den Culture, the magazine Cawaii!, and Gyaru-sa are all flagged to note that primary sources on their definition, timing, and actual scope are thin.

This piece doesn't claim to declare a single "greatest gyaru culture icon" — it's an ordering under the criteria we've disclosed. The entries naming Namie Amuro and Ayumi Hamasaki evaluate only the phenomenon or style each came to embody, never their private lives.
